Allan Torney

Allan Torney is a highly respected international R&D leader with over 30 years of executive experience. He is an accomplished technology strategist who in conjunction with Supply, Manufacturing and Commercial leaders can build a supply and capital framework capable of delivering a product portfolio with significant competitive advantage. He has an extremely detailed process and product knowledge across the CPG field that he utilizes to provide business relevant solutions. Allan is a talented futurist who can accurately predict the challenges that business will face in the future and provides a range of profitable technical options to overcome these.

Allan most recently worked as R&D North American Technology Director for Mars Petcare, a leading manufacturer of pet food products including Pedigree, Sheba, Temptations and Cesar. The parent company, Mars Inc., operates in six business segments: Chocolate, Petcare, Wrigley Gum & Confections, Food, Drinks, and Symbioscience with such brands as M&M’S, Snickers, Dove, Mars, Extra, Orbit, Royal Canin, Juicy Fruit, Spearmint and Milky Way.  On joining Mars as the R&D lead for the Canadian market he was responsible for developing a range of products that became the mainstay of a very successful Canadian Pet Treat market. These were then successfully launched into the larger US market generating even more brand building success. His appointment as Technology Director was a reflection of the impact Allan had on the North American business providing strategic direction for the R&D product groups as well as a strong link with the supply group to ensure that the correct technical investments in terms of plant and machinery where being introduced ahead of time facilitating early product introductions into the relevant markets. This North American role developed into one with even bigger global responsibilities. He was asked to provide advice and guidance at a broader global level where he became a key player in the Mars acquisition group providing technical assessments of targeted opportunities. He won numerous global “Mars Make the Difference Awards” including one for leading a group of global technical experts in the successful reformulation and launch of a new and safer Greenies Dog Treat.

Allan started his career as a Microbiologist with Gay Lea Foods in their Food Technology Division before joining Canada Packers as Section Leader for Product Development covering process meats, pet food, nut products and new technologies.  He then took the role of Senior VP of R&D with Menu Foods, a private label pet food manufacturer before moving the Mars Canada to lead their Pet food R&D division.

Allan holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Toronto, Canada.
